Fallbrook volleyball camps to begin Monday

Three Fallbrook volleyball camps under the oversight of high school and club coach Tom Saunders will be held at Fallbrook High School this summer, beginning with the July 23-27 camp for returning players.

Saunders and his assistants will also instruct at two camps which will run from July 30 through August 3; one will be for incoming freshmen while the other will be a youth camp.

“Gets them all ready for the high school,” said Saunders, who in addition to being the varsity boys coach for Fallbrook High School is also the girls assistant varsity coach at Escondido High School.

Saunders is also the coach of the North County Volleyball Club, which currently does not have boys teams. Saunders has coached both boys and girls in club volleyball as well as in high school competition, and he has more than 20 years of experience as a volleyball coach. His high school highlights include the 1996 CIF San Diego Section championship with the Rancho Buena Vista girls team as well as several league titles, and his club coaching accomplishments include the 2005 Volleyball Festival national championship while coaching the Temecula-based Viper club.

The camp for returning players is for girls only. It will be held at the high school from 9 a.m. to noon July 23-27 and will emphasize team systems, position-specific instruction, and six-on-six competition. The fee for the camp is $150.

The co-ed incoming freshmen camp is designed for incoming freshmen, although middle school girls with club experience will also be considered for that camp. It will take place at the high school from 9 a.m. to noon July 30 through August 3 and will focus on skill development, offensive and defensive drills, and team systems. The fee for that camp is $100.

The youth camp is also co-ed and is designed for boys and girls who will be entering fifth through eighth grades. “Campers will be introduced to contemporary techniques through fun drills and camp competition,” Saunders said.

The youth camp will run from 1 to 4 p.m. July 30 through August 4. The cost for that camp is $100.

The number of assistant coaches will depend on the number of camp participants, but Fallbrook High School boys junior varsity coach Sam Hahn will join Saunders at all three camps.

Interested players or family members can obtain a camp flyer at the high school athletics office or may obtain information by contacting Saunders at [email protected] or (760) 519-6282.
