Recker named Sailing Team captain

Midshipman First Class Matthew Recker, a 2004 graduate of Fallbrook High School, has been selected as captain of the US Naval Academy’s Varsity Offshore Sailing Team. He is also captain of the flagship of the Naval Academy’s racing fleet, Zaraffa, a 66-foot Richel Pugh. As a member of the sailing team, he has competed in races in France, Key West, The Newport to Bermuda Race and others.

In addition to sailboat racing this summer, Recker completed the four-week Leatherneck course at Quantico, VA, as a prerequisite to choosing the United States Marine Corps as his service selection. He hopes to eventually become a Marine pilot.

This coming December, Recker will have completed his BS in mechanical engineering, with a minor in Spanish, in three and a half years and will begin work on a Master’s program at the University of Maryland in January. Pending his acceptance by the Marines, he will be commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps next May.
