Tribe Water Polo u-18s 2-2 in final summer tournament

The Tribe Water Polo under-18 boys split the four games of their final Summer tournament for 2007.

In addition to winning two games and losing two matches at the IE Challenge tournament played July 8-9 at various Murrieta and Lake Elsinore pools, Tribe scored 23 goals during the four games while allowing 23. “It was kind of a 50-50 game,” said Tribe coach Bob Lamont.

All of the Tribe matches were played at Lakeside High School in Lake Elsinore. Tribe opened the tournament with a 12-2 win over Lakeside July 8, expanding a 2-1 lead after the first quarter into a 7-2 halftime lead.

Nick Fast led Tribe with five goals against Lakeside, and Stott Bushnell added four goals. Fast also led the team with two steals, and Fast and Bushnell shared the lead with two assists apiece. “They did well for me,” Lamont said.

The second July 8 game was a 10-3 loss to NBU. Tribe led 3-2 after one quarter, with Jacob Pril scoring two goals and Bushnell putting one ball into the net. “After that they just took over from us,” Lamont said.

NBU led 6-3 by halftime. “They certainly played better than we did that day,” Lamont said.

Tribe’s 1-1 record in its three-team pool play competition placed the Fallbrook-based squad against other teams with 1-1 pool play records for the July 9 matches. Tribe opened the second day of play with a 7-4 win over Notre Dame.

Tribe led Notre Dame 1-0 after the first quarter. The match was tied at two goals apiece when the halftime whistle was blown. Tribe had a 5-2 lead at the end of the third period. “In the third quarter, which normally is our weak quarter, we actually stepped it up,” Lamont said.

Fast led Tribe with three goals and three steals against Notre Dame while Reese Dehm contributed two steals and two goals. Connor Harrison, who will be a sophomore at Fallbrook High School when school resumes, led Tribe with three assists. “Real noteworthy for a young player to come in and do that,” Lamont said.

Tribe goalkeeper Ryan Helling had a fourth-quarter steal as well as four saves during the game. “Ryan Helling, my goalie, kept us in the game,” Lamont said. “He’s stepping up and that’s good to see as well.”

Tribe closed out the tournament with a 7-1 loss to Great Oak. “That was a pretty tough loss for us. We never seemed to really get going,” Lamont said. “They (Great Oak) clearly came to play.”

Fast had five steals against Great Oak and Garrett Bishop had four steals. “We had the ball. We just couldn’t do anything with it,” Lamont said.

Tribe’s only goal came in the fourth quarter. Helling had seven saves and a steal. “They were a pretty strong swimming team, so the goalie had to make a lot of one-on-one stops,” Lamont said.

Many of Tribe’s players were not present for the tournament, and the team played with eight players July 9. “This was not representative,” Lamont said of his team’s performance.

Tribe finished 2-3 in its first Summer tournament and won all five games as well as the championship in the Crescenta Valley Tournament. “It was a good Summer season,” Lamont said. “It was a lot of good water polo played across the Summer, and I think we gained some valuable experience.”
