Angel Society awards scholarships

FALLBROOK — Ben Cook and Joaquin Galarza recently stopped by the Angel Thrift Shop to personally thank the Society for their $3,000 scholarships. Other scholarship recipients were Amy Hansen, Kelly Recker and Allison Carlock.

Philanthropy chair Vivian Steere and publicity chair Billie Foli gave the boys a tour of the shop. They were impressed as they observed donations being received, sorted and displayed for sale. Galarza, who will be leaving soon to attend UCLA, said, “I am very grateful for the generosity of such a wonderful volunteer organization.”

Cook, who is headed for BYU, added, “I, too, would like to say thank you, especially now that I see how much hard work is required to operate this shop.”

It became obvious to these young men that the Angels know how to have fun as they work. All 15 volunteers were dressed in colorful Hawaiian shirts and had taken time to enjoy a luau feast for their lunch break.

The day’s directors in charge, Nancy Chapman, Judy Haggard, Sharon Daniels and Rita Pankey were assisted by volunteers Terry Goodwin, Lois Nicholson, Diane Walker, Sharon Rowe, D’Ann Kubitz, Clara Rust, Marilyn Wertz, Nan Dala, Karen Miller, Liz Glover and Jeanette Short. Angel member Elsie Mitchell had come from Pennsylvania to work with the crew, which she does during each of her annual trips to visit her daughter, Judy Haggard.

The Angel Shop, located at 1002 South Main, is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
