Bush legacy reaches also into Fallbrook

Two US financial proposals are in the news this week. First, the $40 billion-plus armament package for Middle Eastern nations: $20 billion for Saudi Arabia, $13 billion for Egypt and a 25-percent increase in military aid to Israel. The other proposal is the continued funding of the State Child Health Care Program (SCHIP) for America’s children. Which does Bush support, and which does he oppose?

Illogically, Bush is pressing hard for the Middle Eastern armament package and renouncing the children’s healthcare plan.

It seems a stroke of insanity to deliver a new generation of deadly weapons to Saudi Arabia, the nation most directly responsible for spawning the original al-Qaeda attacks on the US and which has since helped finance the violence in Iraq against American troops. More Saudi terrorists have been apprehended by our troops in Iraq than from any other nation.

Additionally, Bush wants to add $13 billion to arm Egypt. Egyptian President Mubarak has for two generations used US military aid to maintain his repressive, totalitarian regime and crush democracy. Israel is already the largest recipient of US foreign aid and weapons. We saw just one year ago how Israel used US bombs in its barbaric attack on Lebanon and used cluster bombs against Lebanese and Palestinian children.

So much money to arm ruthless dictators, bellicose nations and repressive regimes, but no money for our own kids. This is the legacy of our president – a culture of war, death and suffering that reaches into every community, including Fallbrook.
