Irish flair enjoyed at J.J. "Purty" Landers

At J.J. “Purty” Landers Irish Pub and Restaurant, a bit of Irish heritage can be found in downtown Fallbrook. It offers a perfect blend of contemporary and traditional Irish culture.

“Before we came into Fallbrook, people really did not have a place to gather and get together,” said manager John Dawson. The essence of a pub for the Irish is a place where people can socialize, share good times, eat great food and have their favorite drink.

“People can talk to each other over a pint,” said Dawson, grinning.

The ongoing goal for Dawson is to make certain that each and every one of his customers is treated in a friendly fashion, enjoys the food and has fun in a nice Irish atmosphere. This, of course, is accomplished through the restaurant’s diligent, hardworking staff. “They are professional and they, too, have learned about the Irish culture,” remarked Dawson. “That was part of their training.”

For example, when people belly up to the bar, they will often be greeted with the word “slainte,” which means “cheers.” It is this kind of authentic Irish flair that keeps people coming back for more.

To truly immerse oneself in the Irish culture upon visiting the pub, Dawson recommends starting with a pint of Guinness. “I grew up with it in Ireland,” he said. “To some, it’s an acquired taste.” Nevertheless, Dawson mentioned it is a great, frosty pint that goes down smoothly. Guinness goes especially well with Irish fare, he added.

Dawson always suggests the Corned Beef and Cabbage to diners who want to try something new. “This was also something I grew up with; it was very popular around the house.” Shepherd’s Pie, Bangers and Mash, Chicken Boxty and Fish and Chips are other favorite dishes.

If guests are not in the mood for an Irish meal, this pub offers delectable American dishes. There is an eclectic list of tasty appetizers, soups, salads, steaks and burgers.

J.J. “Purty” Landers has also been a preferred destination for live entertainment. Tuesday through Saturday, guests can listen to music ranging from jazz, country and blues to soulful rock, reggae and traditional Irish tunes. Open Mic Night on Sunday is always hopping. “This night is one of the favorites,” added Dawson.

This establishment is also commended for taking care of its designated drivers. Each designated driver receives a complimentary late-night menu appetizer along with a free nonalcoholic beverage. Designated drivers are looked after in the patio area. “We don’t want to see people drinking and driving,” said Dawson.

With this type of care and concern for their patrons, it is no wonder that J.J. “Purty” Landers has been growing rapidly the last two years.

Owners Ned and Brenda Giblin also own R. O’Sullivan’s Irish Pub in Escondido and Tom Giblin’s Irish Pub in Carlsbad. J.J. “Purty” Landers Irish Pub and Restaurant is located at 125 South Main Avenue. Call (760) 731-0839.
