Thoroughly wins Willard Proctor stakes at Hollywood Park

Thoroughly, a two-year-old colt stabled at the San Luis Rey Downs Thoroughbred Training Center, won the Willard L. Proctor Memorial Stakes at Hollywood Park May 27.

“Horse is two for two and ran a very good race,” trainer Peter Miller said of Thoroughly, whose first start May 16 in a Hollywood Park maiden claiming race was also a win.

Michael Baze rode Thoroughly in the May 16 win while Corey Nakatani was the jockey May 27. Miller did not provide specific instructions to Nakatani, who let the horse come from dead last to the front. “Just kind of let him relax the first part of the race and made a late run,” Miller said.

Thoroughly broke fifth among the eight horses in the Willard L. Proctor Memorial Stakes, which is a 5 1/2-furlong race for two-year-olds. He was last at the quarter-mile marker, although only 5 1/2 lengths behind leader Run Brother Ron. At half a mile Run Brother Ron was still in the lead and Thoroughly was still eighth, with the difference increased to 7 1/2 lengths.

At the beginning of the stretch Run Brother Ron was still in the lead and still 7 1/2 lengths ahead of Thoroughly, but Miller’s horse had moved up to fourth place. Thoroughly overtook the three horses in front of him in the stretch and finished 1 ¼ lengths in front of Run Brother Ron, who ended the race in second. Thoroughly had a winning time of 1:05.71.

Thoroughly is owned by Gerson Racing. He his sire was Full Mandate and his dam was King’s Pact.
