'Above the Night Sky' a stunning accomplishment

Zem creates his new CD.

“Life is not a destination, but a journey,” wrote the English Poet Mathew Arnold; and one of the most inspiring aspects of that journey is the infusion of music in one’s soul.

Inspired by Vangelis’ music, Zem Yewusiak, who professionally only uses his first name, has created another soul-calming collection. Zem is known for creating music which draws the listener to tranquil state.

A graduate of California State University, San Marcos, he has had a passion for music since the age of eight.

Zem’s new CD, “Above the Night Sky,” is like a nine-course meal: all the songs are delicious but of varying flavors. The songs have a calming but also inspiring effect not unlike Vangelis’ “Chariots of Fire.”

Acoustic guitars give Course Number One, “Chasing the Sun,” a definite Spanish bent. In my mind I return to a time I spent at Madrid’s relaxing Retiro Park, sitting and watching the sheen on the serene lake while pigeons hovered around waiting for a handout and the sun shone strong and clear.

Number Four in the musical journey is “Strolen’s Choir.” With flashes of what sounds like rain, wind and Gregorian chants, the composition moves with soft notes to a glorious end. This is clearly one of my favorites. It has the surprise of varying tones yet it is completed with the finality of soft waves on a sandy shore.

All of the songs are mixed and composed with one goal: to lead the mind and soul to a place of peace. Zem’s medley of songs is like a slightly sweet Sauvignon Blanc with hints of delicate lavender. It is a sip of music with understated elegance. The artist mingles the tunes marvelously to create an aura of total relaxation.

With “Above the Night Sky” Zem is definitely continuing his inspiring legacy of peace.
