An open letter to parents of FUHS students

Dear parents,

Summerhill Lane is a “private road” that is maintained by all the residents who live on this street. The county does not maintain it; we have to pay for this road to be resurfaced and maintained. This street is private; it is not open for public use at any time, which also includes parking for football games, high school graduation and night school. What you are doing is considered trespassing on private property.

Your children’s safety should be your main concern. By dropping your child off on this side of the street (Summerhill Lane side), he or she will have to go across a very busy main road. Last year, two children were almost hit and a car was rear-ended. In 1998, Abby Reinke was killed crossing this same street in front of the high school doing exactly what you are letting your children do.

What you are doing is illegal and puts your children in great danger, along with trespassing onto a private road. After today you will no longer be allowed down this street in the morning and in the afternoon; there will be a barricade to block the entrance, so please make plans to drop off and pick up your children at the high school, where it is safe.

Thank you for respecting the request of all the Summerhill Lane residents. Think for a moment… how would you like 50-plus cars coming down your private road, pulling into your driveway, throwing their trash out twice a day every day for a whole school year?

Debbie McCain and residents of Summerhill Lane
