Dogs, cats receive special care at Paradise Pet Spa

Kim Nelson and Mindy Deremo, owners of Paradise Pet Spa in Fallbrook, are not only avid animal lovers but very close friends.

“When I moved out to California, I got a job at a pet grooming shop where Mindy was working,” Nelson said. “We became really good friends.”

As the years progressed, Nelson and Deremo fulfilled their collective dream and opened their own pet grooming salon. Together, these ladies have an impressive 16 years’ experience in the industry.

Nelson and Deremo pride themselves on taking care of each and every pet to paw its way through their business doors. The menu of services includes a detailed wash, grooming, nail trimming, ear cleaning and more.

“We use all-natural shampoos and conditioners,” said Nelson. “We also have products for sensitive skin.”

This team has utilized a particular regimen with nervous “first-timers.”

“We try to have the dogs get to know a certain person; that way, we become really close to them,” Nelson explained. After repeat visits, eventually these dogs develop a sense of trust and their tails wag at the sight of Nelson and/or Deremo. And of course, the scrumptious treat at the end of a dog’s salon visit is always sure to please.

Nelson mentioned that owners are encouraged to stay during a first grooming visit, especially if a dog appears uneasy.

“We invite the owner to come sit with the animal,” said Deremo. Generally, seeing its owner nearby curbs the pet’s anxiety.

At times, Paradise Pet Spa has helped both customers and canines who have had negative experiences at other grooming establishments.

“We try to get to know the dog and make [the grooming] a good experience,” Deremo said. “Our goal is to make sure our dogs are happy.”

Through the years, Nelson has determined that canines, especially those who need their coats trimmed, should be groomed at least every four to six weeks. Nail clipping and anal gland cleaning should be done just as frequently.

Grooming for long-haired felines is typically recommended every three to four months, while short-haired cats can be groomed annually. However, if a pet owner wants her cat’s nails trimmed, regular salon visits are recommended.

“Cats should really get their nails clipped, because their nails can grow back into their paws,” said Nelson. “It can be really painful for the animal.”

According to Nelson, cats may cease to groom themselves as they grow into their senior years. At this stage, cats need to be groomed on a regular basis.

“Some older cats stop cleaning themselves,” she said, “so they need to be groomed more often.”

Nelson and Deremo adore working with animals. “It’s what I have wanted to do my whole life,” said Nelson. For this duo, waking up in the mornings, knowing that they will be taking care of their four-legged friends, is always an inspiration and enjoyment.
