Granite Construction's Indio Quarry earns Silver Environmental Excellence Award

INDIO — Granite Construction Company’s Indio Quarry has earned the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association’s (NSSGA) Silver Environmental Excellence Award. This award provides national recognition for operations that actively contribute to the maintenance of the environment as evidenced by a corporate commitment to the exemplary use of environmental controls and systems.

Granite Construction’s Indio Quarry is a sand and gravel quarry that produces aggregate products for the construction industry. A few of the products produced include asphalt concrete mixes, crushed rocks and sands, masonry sands, rip rap, aggregate bases, recycled asphalt, and Class II base for road construction. The quarry has been in operation since the 1940s.

The award is based, in part, on the extent to which an operation meets and exceeds technical environmental and regulatory requirements. The operation must be in compliance with all applicable governmental environmental regulatory requirements and does not have a pattern of violations two years prior to application.

Applicants were judged by a panel composed of representatives from either: the NSSGA membership, state aggregate associations, the construction industry, related trade association, trade press, environmental awareness group, or a state/federal regulatory agency. There are six categories that are judged to earn this award. They include: Fundamental Environmental Programs, Employee Training, Site Best Management Practices, Facility Environmental Outreach Programs, Environmental Results, and Environmental Management Systems.

This recognition is the first time that the Indio Quarry has been honored with a Silver Environmental Excellence Award designation.
