Michael Calvanese has traveled extensively throughout Europe, enabling him to capture the core of the bistro and trattoria concept and apply it to Café des Artistes. This colorful, whimsical bistro follows Europe’s passion for art and food, being that their upscale eatery is located in the same building as the Art Center of Fallbrook. This eatery compliments the lovely adjacent art gallery. “Food and art have always been my top priorities,” said Calvanese.

In the five years that Café des Artistes has been open, Calvanese has built seamless friendships and a loyal clientele that keeps growing. “I really love the ability to mingle with people,” said Calvanese. “We have a good time here.”

The consistency of fine food, friendly atmosphere and great service is what keeps Café des Artistes so viable. “Consistency breeds excellence. I strive on being consistent in our food all the time. We are very anti-chemical, so we use almost no canned or boxed products,” said Calvanese. Fresh bread is made daily at this bistro. Their bread is what makes their mouthwatering panino sandwiches so popular.

Café des Artistes brews their own tea, and their coffee beans are roasted especially for the bistro in an effort to minimize the presence of chemicals in their offerings. Their soda fountain, a blast from the past, is a favorite because all soft drinks are handmade.

For the second time in four years, Sunset Magazine has recognized Café des Artistes. In fact, the bistro will be mentioned in the November or December publication as a dining destination in Fallbrook. In addition to this wonderful printed honorary mention, Calvanese is always thrilled when diners compliment him on the overall establishment.

Calvanese has a background in retail computer systems. Plunging into the food and beverage industry was not an uncomfortable one, as he comes from an Italian heritage that enjoys food.

“ live to eat,” Calvanese said, chuckling. “When you’re eating breakfast you’re wondering what you’ll be having for dinner. That’s what Italians do.”

His passion for food is prevalent as diners peruse the scrumptious menu he thoughtfully created.

On Friday and Saturday nights, diners can enjoy their tasty meals while hearing the talented voices and instrumentals of Larry Robinson and Jarry Presko.

“Jarry is a magnificent violinist – one of the finest I’ve ever heard,” said Calvanese. He added that Presko was “a child prodigy” who played in Carnegie Hall when he was 12 years old.

Calvanese is delighted to have his new assistant manager, Emily Hammer, at the helm. Hammer was born and raised in Fallbrook and was a perpetual diner at Café des Artistes before her employment. Hammer’s welcoming smile, professional demeanor and ardor for art and food will further enhance the ambience at this stylish Mediterranean bistro.

Café des Artistes provides catering for its clientele. The facility can accommodate seating for up to 100 people in their side room for special events and/or private parties.
