Tire, large battery recycling offered

A free tire recycling day will be held on September 15 as part of the Fallbrook Community Recycling/Clean-up Day coordinated by Keep Fallbrook Clean and Green. The Department of Environmental Health of the County of San Diego is sponsoring the tire recycling event, to be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the south parking area of Fallbrook High School, 1050 Winterhaven Road.

The county is not able to accept tires with rims or wheels; the tires must be reasonably clean of dirt and no larger than 16.5 inches inside diameter. Only residential tires will be processed and only nine tires per vehicle can be accepted. Those with more than nine tires to recycle may call 1-877-R-1-EARTH.

And this year, for the first time, the recycling day will also feature a car/truck/industrial battery collection station, sponsored by Dave Gleason of BP (Battery Pros) Batteries. Industrial batteries, automobile batteries, heavy equipment batteries, solar batteries and the like will all be accepted.

Residents should bring their large batteries to the recycling event to recycle with BP Batteries at the large parking lot behind the Art Center. They can also bring their dry cell household batteries to the same location.

Anyone who misses this event can always take their large batteries directly to BP Batteries, 805 East Mission Road and dry cell batteries to any of the convenient battery recycling locations around town: at the FPUD parking lot at 990 East Mission, Major Market, Albertsons, Joe’s Hardware and the Fallbrook Public Library.

Keep Fallbrook Clean and Green is also coordinating two other recycling activities on this day: an e-waste drop-off site at the parking lot behind the Art & Cultural Center and a paper shredding event at the same location. The e-waste collection is being handled by 1-800-Got-Junk? and the paper shredding by Shred-It of Vista.

September 15 is also the day of the community-wide Clean-up Day, jointly sponsored by I Love a Clean San Diego and San Diego Coastkeeper, from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers wishing to participate in this aspect of the day can sign in beginning at 8 a.m. at the parking lot behind the Art & Cultural Center.
