Field hockey struggles on new turf, fares well on road

Despite losing its home opener September 11, the Fallbrook High School field hockey team began the season 3-1 by earning shutout wins in the Warriors’ first three road games.

Fallbrook opened the season with a 7-0 victory September 5 at Rancho Bernardo, took a 1-0 win September 6 at Poway, and garnered a 1-0 triumph September 12 at Torrey Pines.

“I’ll take it,” Fallbrook coach Kathy Waite said of the Warriors’ 3-1 record.

Fallbrook and Rancho Bernardo had faced each other in a scrimmage a week before the season opener, and the two teams had battled to a 0-0 draw. “I was very surprised,” Waite said of the 7-0 victory.

Devon Holman had three goals against Rancho Bernardo and Jordan Bretsch added two goals. Goalkeeper Roslyn Reynoso earned her first varsity shutout.

Katie Gangnath had the lone goal in the game against Poway with Bretsch providing the assist.

The Warriors made their debut on the new synthetic turf field against Cathedral Catholic. The game was scoreless in regulation and throughout the first ten-minute overtime period, but in the second ten-minute overtime period the Dons scored a goal to win the game.

“We had not practiced on the turf. It was not open for practice,” Waite said.

The Rancho Bernardo and Torrey Pines games were also played on synthetic turf fields. Because the Poway game conflicted with a football game, the football teams used the stadium turf while the field hockey match was played on grass.

Cathedral Catholic had been able to practice on its own turf field while the Warriors had no turf practice prior to the September 11 game. Waite still considered the synthetic turf debut a positive event. “It’s so much better than our field. Our field has not been reconditioned since last hockey season. It’s very poor,” she said.

Holman scored the only goal in the Torrey Pines game with Emily Badilla obtaining the assist. “I was pretty pleased the way the girls bounced back after losing to Cathedral,” Waite said. “That was excellent. I give the girls a lot of credit for that.”
