Hasvold third in Woodbridge

Fallbrook High School senior Bret Hasvold had the third-fastest time in the Sweepstakes Division at the Woodbridge Invitational held September 15 at Woodbridge High School.

On the heels of Woodbridge and a “best overall clocking at Laguna Hills” the week before, Dyestat, a respected “official” unofficial CA state cross country website, now lists Bret at #4 in the state.

At Woodbridge Hasvold’s time of 14:27 on the 3.0-mile course trailed only the14:17 of University City High School’s Mac Fleet and the 14:26 of Trabuco Hills High School runner Scott Blair. Hasvold’s time was also the seventh fastest ever run by a senior at the Woodbridge Invitational and the 14th fastest by any runner in that meet’s history.

“Bret did an exceptional job,” said Fallbrook cross-country coach Marty Hauck.

The rest of Fallbrook High School’s boys’ cross-country team didn’t fare as well. Only two other Warriors earned medals in any division. “They ran well, but not well enough,” Hauck said.

Runners from fifty schools competed in each race, and medals were given to the top 100 finishers in each division. “Probably one of the most competitive races until Mount Sac comes around,” Hauck said.

The Woodbridge Invitational is also the only cross-country race in the United States run at night. Banks of lights are brought in to illuminate the course.

Josh Smith finished with a time of 15:47 to place 93rd in the Sweepstakes Division. Placing in the top five among Fallbrook runners but not in the top 100 of all division runners were Uri Aguirre at 15:52, Todd Van Duzer at 16:03, and Sam Liner at 16:10.

The third Fallbrook medalist was Drew Earle, who competed in the freshman race and placed 59th with a time of 18:07.

“It was a good early season effort, and I think it shows us where we need to go this season and what we have to do in order to get there,” Hauck said. “It’s going to take a lot of hard work and a little bit of patience.”
