Let's be rational

Jon Monday’s latest harangue (Sept.20) about Iraq reminds me of a couple of my mother’s sayings. First, I’m “sick and tired” of the constant complaining and second, “you can’t see beyond the end of your nose”.

In retrospect it is not unreasonable to say that we should not have gone into Iraq but that is not an option now. Rational people do not “wring their hands” over things that are past and cannot be changed. Rather they spend their energy on determining the best action for the circumstances that exist today. The lessons of Vietnam suggest that a precipitous withdrawal is not a good choice. After the U.S. left many hundreds of thousands of people died trying to escape (the boat people) and at the hands of the communists. The anti-Vietnam crowd was very silent. Were those lives of no consequence?

Those who disparage General Petraeus are disingenuous. He is an honorable man trying to bring a successful conclusion to a difficult task.
