Burrows third in Shooting Olympic Selection Match, wins juniors

Fallbrook’s Brian Burrows placed third in USA Shooting’s Olympic Selection Match August 12-14 in Colorado Springs and won the junior division.

“It was a big accomplishment for me there. I made the national team and I got to shoot with the best, against the best shooters in the world, and came out pretty strong,” Burrows said.

The top three shooters in each Olympic Selection Match category earned berths on the US National Team. The scores also carry over to the second round of the selection process for the 2008 Olympics; in March the competitors will shoot at Kerrville, Texas, and the two shooters with the highest combined scores from Colorado Springs and Kerrville will represent the United States at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The competition at the Fort Carson range in Colorado Springs saw Burrows accumulate 265 points in the junior division. Josh Creswell placed second among juniors with 259 points. The junior division allows competitors who do not turn 21 during the year to compete; Burrows is 19.

“It was just nice to be on top,” Burrows said of winning the junior competition. “Juniors was fun, because I got to shoot with my friends.”

In the shotgun Olympic Selection Match winner Lane Bade accumulated 271 points, Bret Erickson compiled 268 points, and Burrows came away with 265 points. Burrows had never previously competed in a national championship match, while Bade and Erickson have each shot in three different Olympics.

On the first day of competition Burrows shot all 100 targets. “That was pretty cool,” he said.

Burrows only shot 93 of 100 targets on the second day. “I don’t know what happened. It just kind of happened,” he said.

The third day’s shooting consisted of 50 targets, and Burrows was successful on 49. “I came back strong,” he said.

Burrows noted that he spent a lot of time praying during the competition. “I definitely felt God helped me through,” he said. “I wouldn’t have got where I am now without God.”
