'Paws to Read' at Fallbrook Library

FALLBROOK — Coming to Fallbrook Library this fall is “Paws to Read,” a program designed to increase children’s reading skills while forging a bond with a gentle therapy dog. Modeled after successful programs at libraries in Vista, Valley Center and Rancho Santa Fe, each child spends 15 minutes reading a book aloud to a non-judgmental four-legged friend.

Therapy dogs volunteering their time to the program include Sevi, a Kangal dog owned by Kathy Lambert; Molly, a Shetland sheepdog owned by Joy McCormack; Misty, a standard poodle owned by Suzi Thrasher; and Cobie, another Shetland sheepdog owned by Nancy Townley.

The dogs and their owners are members of Love on Leash, a national organization that trains, evaluates and certifies pets as therapy animals.

The program will be held the second Thursday of every month, beginning October 11, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Young readers may sign up in advance at the reference librarian’s desk.

For more information on the reading program, call (760) 728-2373. To learn more about Love on a Leash, go to http://www.loveonaleash.org.
