Supervisors adjourn meeting in memory of Marty Hauck

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors adjourned their September 25 meeting in memory of Fallbrook High School teacher and athletic coach Marty Hauck.

“Marty Hauck’s life was dedicated to showing and keeping young people on the right path,” said Supervisor Bill Horn, who read the adjournment in memory. “That went way beyond any athletic competition. Marty specialized in lessons for life.”

Hauck, who was 53, died September 19 from a heart attack shortly after finishing a run during the cross-country team’s practice.

Horn noted that Fallbrook High School principal Rod King described Hauck as a compassionate man and an effective teacher with a passion for seeing students succeed. Horn also noted that Fallbrook High School teacher Tim Oder, who was also Hauck’s immediate predecessor as the Warrior head boys track and field coach, mentioned that Hauck’s influence on his students’ lives remained well after their graduations and that many former students returned to visit him.

Hauck was born in Palo Alto to a Marine Corps family and lived in many places, although he spent a significant part of his childhood in Imperial Beach and graduated from Mar Vista High School. He also graduated from San Diego State University and began his teaching career at Brawley High School in 1977 before being hired by the Fallbrook Union High School District in 1979.

Horn noted that Hauck’s coaching honors included selection as the state coach of the year by the California Coaches Association. In addition to serving as a cross-country and track coach, Hauck also taught freshman honors English and senior English. He had planned to step down as a coach at the end of the year.

“Fallbrook is a closely-knit village, and he is already greatly missed,” Horn said.
