The demise of 'The Big Tree'

The Big Tree at the Winterwarm-Winterhaven merge has long been a well-known landmark for an otherwise obscure turnoff road. When the county wanted to take out “The Big Tree,” some of the neighbors objected to its removal.
“The Big Tree” is now gone, having been felled on August 30. It was determined by county authorities that its location and condition made the tree a possible danger to passersby. The eucalyptus was “very dead,” said one worker, and was removed by the County of San Diego in cooperation with San Diego Gas & Electric.
