Our kids vs. Mr. Bush's war: make your choice

Now so deeply bogged down in the Iraq quagmire, Mr. Bush has finally pushed the nation to a desperate choice: will we continue this war, or we take care of our own children. When nations reach the end of their resources, they often face such choices.

We have eviscerated our military manpower on the battlefield; we depleted our treasury long ago and now resort to the madness of borrowing from our enemies; and we have alienated friends and allies and incited resentment around the world against our nation.

So desperate is our situation that our president says we no longer have the resources to provide for the health of our own children. Before the end of the month Mr. Bush will ask permission to borrow another $50 billion for his war because he “misunderstimated” back in May just how much he needed to keep his war going until Christmas.

Our congressmen, Darrell Issa and Brian Bilbray, support Bush’s choice: fund the war, but not our kids’ healthcare. Why? Because “the nation cannot afford” this bill (SCHIP), stated Mr. Bush. Only the most despotic of leaders choose guns over their own children, even in time of war.

Michael Moore, clownish warrior that he is, addresses seriously this problem in his movie “Sicko.” You can see this movie free tonight (Oct. 4) at FPUD at 7 p.m.

“Moore isn’t the first to say that the healthcare system is sick – that it’s riddled with inequities and iniquities,” wrote TIME Magazine, “…but he’s the one who does it the noisiest, with the highest entertainment value, mixing muckraking with showmanship, Ida Tarbell with P.T. Barnum. His new movie…fits honorably in that tradition. As both harangue and movie tragicomedy, ‘Sicko’ is socko.”

Regardless of whether the nation can continue borrowing to fund the Bush War, the nation knows absolutely it must provide for the basic health needs of our children, even if we have to borrow the money. The SCHIP bill, fortunately, provides a means for its own funding. We know we can afford it.
