Chavez, Duffin, Holman, Pomerantz honored

Cody Chavez, Jules Duffin and Devon Holman of Fallbrook High School and Trish Pomerantz of Ivy High School were honored as outstanding students at the Fallbrook Community Student of the Month breakfast held October 4 at Fallbrook Golf Club’s Hukilau Restaurant.

“These students are leaving footprints on our hearts and minds,” said emcee Sue Johnson admiringly. In its eleventh year, the Fallbrook Community Student of the Month program has honored 347 exceptional high school students.

Cody Chavez was selected for the Student of the Month honor as a result of a nomination by Fallbrook High football and baseball coach Gregg Madden.

“Cody is a unique individual,” Madden said. “He leads by example. People look to him because they know what he is doing is the right thing to do.”

Chavez achieved Eagle Scout ranking two years ago, has served as the FHS junior varsity baseball team captain and is a recipient of the “Warrior Award” in baseball. A student with exceptional leadership skills, Chavez said he plans to attend a four-year state school after his graduation from Fallbrook.

“I plan to study sports medicine,” Chavez said. “I want to thank Coach Madden for this honor; he is the best coach I’ve ever had in my life.”

Jules Duffin was honored as a Student of the Month based on the recommendation of Fallbrook High agriculture department lead teacher Doug Sehnert.

“Jules promotes both Fallbrook High School and our agriculture community,” Sehnert explained. “She always has a smile on her face and looks out for other students. She always tries to get kids involved.”

Duffin is this year’s chapter president of Fallbrook FFA and an active member of the ASB Leadership Team and Link Crew. She has served three years as a student intern (volunteer) for the Village News, writing about events and achievements occurring in FFA. A recipient of the Golden State FFA Degree, Duffin has a keen interest in communications and American Sign Language.

“I have had a lot of fun being involved in ag,” Duffin said. “I plan to attend El Camino Community College in Los Angeles and then go on to Fresno State, where I will major in ag communications and American Sign Language interpreting.”

Devon Holman was recommended for the Student of the Month honor by Fallbrook High field hockey coach Kathy Waite.

“Devon is an excellent player and a key component of our team,” Waite said. “She strives to keep our team positive. Her work ethic is very strong. She is a well-rounded person.”

Holman maintains an impressive 4.2 grade point average and is ranked eighth in her class. She is the captain of the varsity field hockey team and finds time to volunteer at both REINS therapeutic horsemanship program and with outreach ministry work in Mexico.

Due to her skill, Holman is currently fielding offers from colleges attempting to recruit her for field hockey. She has had the distinction of being named to the National Indoor Team and the FUTURES team.

“I want to thank my parents because, without them, I couldn’t have achieved everything I have,” Holman said. “I am currently looking at Division I field hockey schools and am thinking about majoring in political science because I love history.”

Trish Pomerantz was named Student of the Month based on a nomination from Ivy High School teacher Kelly Walker.

“Trish is really deserving of this honor,” Walker said. “She is motivated and committed to doing well. She intends to graduate early from high school.”

Pomerantz came to Ivy High School after relocating here from out of state. To her credit, she completed two years of high school her first year and is on course to complete her second two years this year. In addition, she is in enrolled in Palomar College classes and holds down a job. Pomerantz said it is her ambition to become a surgeon in the US Navy.

“When I first came to Ivy [High], I thought I’d be looked down on because Fallbrook High School is good, but that wasn’t the case,” Pomerantz said, smiling. “I had just been through some rough years. I am really surprised and happy to receive this honor.”

Family, friends and members of the business and service communities, as well as representatives of elected officials, attended the popular event and provided certificates of achievement and gifts to the students honored.
