New memories will be waiting to be made this holiday season in downtown Fallbrook, based on plans announced last week by representatives of the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce and the Historic Downtown Merchants Association. A variety of events will take place that offer family fun in the Village (see calendar with this article).
“Hometown Memories” will be the theme of the annual Christmas Parade, slated to take place Saturday evening, December 1, beginning at 5 p.m. Chairman Roy Costello announced the Grand Marshal for this year’s parade will be local resident Dode Martin. Martin is a pioneer of drag racing and devoted volunteer of the Fallbrook Historical Society. Most recently he has volunteered as construction superintendent for the new Donald J. Rivers Interpretive Center being built on the Society’s Rocky Crest Road compound.
A mere one week later, on Saturday morning, December 8, from 8 to 11 a.m., families will have the opportunity to have “Breakfast with Santa,” says Honorary Mayor John Harris. The event, featuring a pancake breakfast for a small fee, will be held in the Major Market parking lot in the 800 block of South Main Avenue.
Harris said he wanted to bring greater opportunity for children to have fun during the holidays: “We want to do more for the kids this holiday season – specifically for them.”
As a result, Harris is organizing free photos with Santa and a free holiday craft project at the event. “Christmas is about celebrating faith, providing a joyous experience for children, bringing members of the community together,” he explained.
Chamber of Commerce representative Carol Eastman says she is encouraging groups that want to be included in the Christmas Parade to turn in the necessary entry form by November 1. Forms can be picked up at the chamber office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Live animals, children and camels are desired,” Eastman said, chuckling. “We could also use more volunteers willing to be parade marshals, banner carriers and more.” Volunteers can call Eastman at (760) 728-5845. Last year the parade contained about 150 entries.

The Historic Downtown Merchants Association, according to Amy Rowland, owner of Wee Little Sprouts children’s store, is gearing up for the kickoff of their Sixth Annual Joyful Traditions events on Saturday, November 24, at 5 p.m.
As a prelude to the evening event, Connections Networking will present the annual community Christmas tree in the Village Square (corner of Main and Alvarado) from 3 to 6 p.m. that day.
Connections Chairperson Sandra Buckingham says her organization will once again provide the decorations but plan on “doing something different this year.” What they have in mind is to get children and senior citizens together to make decorations for the tree utilizing this year’s theme, “Wishing on a Star.”
“Community members can enjoy our activities in the Village Square and then move right into the Joyful Traditions event,” Buckingham said. The community tree will be officially illuminated at 5 p.m.
Joyful Traditions will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening, at which time children will be able to climb up on Santa’s lap and express their Christmas wishes. Parents are encouraged to bring their own cameras to take photos.
Rowland said the location of Santa has not been finalized yet but an announcement will be made soon with that information. The holiday lights lining the historic downtown district will be in full force for the event.
“We will also have [horse-drawn] carriage rides; loading and unloading will take place at the corner of Main and Alvarado and carolers from the Fallbrook Chorale will stroll around historic downtown and provide entertainment.”

On Friday, November 30, Joyful Traditions will continue from 5 to 8 p.m. with “Customer Appreciation Night,” where “Cinderella-style” carriage rides will be offered to those picking up the free pass mentioned above. The carolers will be back that evening providing beautiful holiday music.
