Hasvold, Aguirre win races at So Cal Invite

Fallbrook High School cross-country runners Bret Hasvold and Uriel Aguirre won their races at the Southern California Invitational held October 13 at Guajome Park.

“We did okay,” said Fallbrook coach Marco Arias. “We had a couple of key runners that were out.”

Medals were given to the top ten runners in each race. In addition to Hasvold and Aguirre, Fallbrook’s Sam Liner earned a medal for his fourth-place finish.

Josh Smith, who finished second behind Hasvold in the Warriors’ league opener September 28 against Vista, was held out of the Southern California Invitational due to a leg injury. An injury has also kept Kevin Strickfaden from competing.

The Southern California Invitational pits each school’s #1 runner against the other #1 runners, each #2 runner against the other #2 runners, and each #3 runner against the other #3 competitors. The #4 and #5 runners compete in the same race, as do the #6 and #7 runners. Hasvold competed as Fallbrook’s #1 runner.

“Bret, he ran a really nice race,” Arias said. “He’s really come into his own.”

Hasvold’s time of 16:02 on the 3.1-mile course includes a fall. “It was a very muddy course, so I was very pleased the way he ran,” Arias said.

Rain earlier in the day had created the course conditions. “The course didn’t take the water well,” Arias said.

Hasvold won his race fairly easily. “I don’t think he was challenged much in this race,” Arias said.

Smith’s absence moved Todd Van Duzer to the #2 race. “He ran fairly well,” Arias said of Van Duzer. “He’s still having some trouble breathing.”

Van Duzer’s time of 17:49 placed him 12th among the #2 runners.

Liner competed in the #3 race and completed the course in 17:10 for his fourth-place medal. Aguirre completed the 4-5 race with a time of 17:00, and Sean Wood placed 12th in that race at 18:09.

Aaron Thielk was Fallbrook’s #6 runner, posting a time of 18:23 in the 6-7 race. Richard Wojan had a time of 18:27 in the 6-7 race.
