I would like to thank Guajome Park Rangers Rusty and Adam for their hospitality on Thursday, October 25, while we were evacuated
from Fallbrook. Noting our extreme fatigue with no immediate place
to go, Rusty set up an air mattress and covers in the pavilion so we
could get some sleep and figure out what else to do.
Their efforts were far more than could be expected and were in sharp
contrast with the adversarial attitude of the police and guardsmen in the Apple Market parking lot. The police had a “could care less” attitude to questions from locals and the guard was standing around with rifles, as though expecting Fallbrookians to try and shoot their way in. Finally, the explanation was offered that they were there to prevent looting. It seems to me that if the authorities let the residents in, the sheer number of residents would be likely to identify any nearby looters.
Between now and next time, it would appear that a thorough communications review by all involved local, state and government
officials would be in order.
