High school students will do Turkey Walk Nov. 1 - Funds will be raised for Fallbrook Food Pantry

Fallbrook Union High School ASB Public Relations Commissioner Kerry Popko, a senior, is the chairman of the Turkey Walk/Run held to benefit the Fallbrook Food Pantry. This senior and other students are helping out with the project because “our spirit is so strong at Fallbrook High School and we want to bring it into the town.”

The students are putting up posters and hand-decorating t-shirts with turkey hands, their campaign symbol. The fingers represent the turkey feathers and the thumb is the beak.

As another avenue for fund-raising the students have initiated a contest in which each person pays one dollar to vote for the teacher they want to see wear a turkey suit. “It is a way to get the kids involved and the money will go toward the Turkey Walk,” Popko noted.

“I see all these people who are in Fallbrook who are below the poverty line and we have to help them,” Popko continued. “Fourteen percent of the people in Fallbrook are under the poverty line.”

The three-mile walk/run will begin at the Fallbrook Food Pantry and wind through town. “We want to make this a fun event, so there will be music at the end [of the route],” Popko commented. “We are still looking for some bands to play.”

Popko and her co-students in the ASB Leadership Class want to get the teachers, as well as the students, involved in the walk. “The teachers at Fallbrook High really want to make a difference,” she said.

In addition to decorating t-shirts, the students are wearing clothespins painted with the words “Turkey Walk” as a way to show their support.

The Turkey Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, November 10, at 9 a.m. at the Fallbrook Food Pantry, 1042 South Mission Road. Please call (760) 728-7608 for further information.
