Bagpipe, marimba soloists featured Nov. 11

FALLBROOK — The Fallbrook Music Society’s 30th anniversary season continues on Sunday, November 11, with the Redlands Symphony Orchestra performing the music of three great composers.

Conductor Jon Robertson will lead the acclaimed orchestra, which has received the California Arts Council’s highest “exemplary” rating for seven consecutive seasons.

Filled with beautiful music and virtuosic talent, this program begins with “An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise” by Peter Maxwell Davies. This 20th century work based on old tunes from Scotland is a picture postcard memory of a wedding Davies attended.

Davies’ musical inspiration comes from the rugged beauty of the land and the blending of Gaelic and Norse culture. Ian Whitelaw, solo bagpiper in this piece, won the United States Gold Medal contest.

Concertgoers will also hear the first marimba concerto ever written, “Concertino for Marimba.” This 1940 work, created by American composer Paul Creston, was designed to demonstrate the capabilities of the marimba as a solo instrument with orchestral accompaniment.

The concert’s final selection, Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter,” is a favorite among concertgoers. The largest and most complex of Mozart’s symphonies, it is considered one of Mozart’s most inspired creations.

This concert, the second in a series of five, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 11, in the Bob Burton Center for the Performing Arts, 2400 South Stage Coach Lane.

A conductor’s preview open to all ticket holders will be held at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets for the performance are available at (760) 451-8644 or online at http://www.fallbrookmusicsociety.org.
