Broadway travels to Center for the Arts

ESCONDIDO — The California Center for the Arts brings eight stellar musical shows to North County as part of its 2007-2008 performance season.

The musical fun starts Thanksgiving weekend with “The Producers,” winner of the most Tony Awards ever, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Costume Design.

The excitement continues to unfurl in the new year with favorites including those hunky, humorous Australians “The Ten Tenors;” Susan Egan singing from her critically acclaimed Broadway roles, including Belle in Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast;” and the exemplary 1959 musical “Gypsy.”

By popular demand, Neil Berg’s “101 Years of Broadway,” featuring all the classic Broadway music, returns for an encore performance to last season’s crowd-pleasing visit.

The full calendar includes:

• “The Producers” – November 23 & 24

• “The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley” – January 27

• “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” – February 3

• “The Ten Tenors” – February 10

• “Gypsy” – February 16

• “Susan Egan, the Belle of Broadway” – March 29

• “101 Years of Broadway” – April 27

• “The Wedding Singer” – May 31 & June 1

“The music, costumes and spirit of live musical theater create a unique energy both onstage and among the audience, making this a favorite genre of our patrons,” said Vicky Basehore, California Center for the Arts president. “We are very excited to bring a wonderful mix of classics and newer Broadway musicals to the residents of San Diego North this season.”
