AAUW includes AVID students in program

The Fallbrook Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) held their general meeting this past Saturday. President Chris Young, who attended the National AAUW convention in June, reported on her experiences and education at the convention, whose theme was “Expanding a Legacy of Leadership.”

One of the central topics covered at the convention was “Intergenerational Perspectives.” To hitch onto the theme, girls in the AVID mentoring program at Fallbrook High were invited to participate.

After Young’s address to the audience, groups were formed consisting of mentors and AVID students with topics that pertained to reaching for success in the present and future. Students then spoke to the audience of their findings.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program at the high school that supports students with college aspirations, who because of economic or social constraints may not otherwise do so, to attain their goals.

AAUW members who wish may mentor these students by providing special experiences throughout the year. Heading the AVID mentors is Barbara Ajello.
