Decorating ideas found in homes on tour

Home tours are a good way to learn from other people’s decorating talents. Whether that skill is in tastefully displaying many collections, developing a custom home design or remodeling an older home, there was much to learn from and admire at the three homes in the Fallbrook Woman’s Club Velvet Cat Home Tour on October 20.

The Vantage Place home, first on the tour, is obviously home to a collector. However, that does not mean that it is crowded or cluttered. The collections are well organized by theme and are contained in appropriate places. Besides many objects from foreign countries, the homeowners have collected a vast number of photographs of family and friends that are gathered in a variety of frames on multiple shelves and surfaces in the master bedroom. This is a much easier way to keep loved ones close than by trying to hang all of their pictures directly on the wall.

On the patio, hand-painted tiles from Guadalajara hang on the outside wall of the house continuing the multicultural theme of home furnishings while the surrounding yard is just as orderly and welcoming as the inside of the home. A collection of stone figures and gazing balls sits around the outer edges of the yard while the side lawn is divided by a rock walkway containing a rose garden down the middle.

A lot of thought and planning also went into the second home on the tour, called “Mid-Pointe,” which was designed by the homeowners. This home has many unique aspects which add to the décor. For instance, most of the rooms are odd shaped, creating many interesting angles accentuated by crown molding throughout the house. Because the rooms are painted different colors, all in muted hues, the molding provides a unifying effect to the home. The use of many arched windows and French doors also contributes to the house’s uniqueness.

Built with every imaginable convenience, “Mid-Pointe” includes an outdoor living space just as comfortable as the indoor area. The covered section of the patio includes a fireplace as well as an outdoor kitchen while the cushioned seating provides a spectacular view of the valley between it and Sleeping Indian hill. All in all, this is the kind of home that many people dream of owning.

Instead of starting from scratch, the owner of the third home on the tour remodeled her house, which was built in 1957. The remake of this “’50s Fixer” consisted of taking limited space and reconfiguring it to maximize its potential. The redesign included turning one end of the master bedroom into a master bath with dressing area. At the other end of the house, the attached garage was converted into a guest bedroom and bath. Other changes included installing bigger windows and sliding glass doors to take full advantage of the incredible views outside.

Also capitalizing on the scenery, the improvements to the outside include a new lower patio with fire pit which, in addition to the patio areas next to the house, a gazebo and a salt water pool, provides a comfortable place to relax and enjoy the views to the south of Fallbrook. The remodeling done on this home certainly improves its original design and makes the most out of its enviable hilltop location.

Getting to see these homes on the Velvet Cat Home Tour made for a worthwhile afternoon for all those who bought tickets. Members of the Woman’s Club greeted guests and provided information at each of the homes. To add to the occasion, the homes were decorated for fall by Bonsall Florist. All proceeds will be donated to charity.
