Boys harriers 14th in Mt. SAC Super Sweepstakes division

Fallbrook High School’s boys cross-country team competed in the Super Sweepstakes division at the Mt. SAC invitational October 20 and finished 14th among the 25 schools in that division.

“Not too bad,” said Fallbrook coach Marco Arias. “It was the race of the day.”

Bret Hasvold set a personal course record with a time of 15:31 on the Mt. SAC 3.0-mile course. “He was disappointed as far as his place,” Arias said.

Hasvold finished 14th but was second before running up Poopout Hill. “It’s an intense part of the course,” Arias said.

Five of the six Warrior runners who had previously competed in the Mt. SAC meet set personal course records. Uriel Aguirre had a time of 16:11, Josh Smith finished at 16:21, Sam Liner crossed the finish line 16:48 after the starting gun, and Sean Wood posted a time of 16:53 to achieve a personal best by more than a minute.

Todd Van Duzer, who has been plagued by breathing problems this year, ran the course in 17:35 and did not match his personal record. Aaron Thielk made his Mt. SAC debut and had a time of 17:45.

“All of our runners ran hard, and I was pleased with the way they ran,” Arias said.

The team position, however, served as a wake-up call for the Warriors. “We’ve got to go back and work out, because obviously there are some teams that are in contention,” Arias said. “It was a very good look to see what’s out there and see what we need to do to improve our chances to be successful at the next level.”
