Sheri's Flowers: creating floral masterpieces

When you step into Sheri’s Flowers on Main Avenue, you immediately feel the delightful, upscale country-style ambience. Aside from the lovely take-home bouquets and arrangements available, its quaint gift shop provides shoppers with unique trinkets, such as attractive pedestal candleholders, a selection of quality candles and stylish picture frames.

The floral arrangements at Sheri’s Flowers are true masterpieces. “We are a full-service flower shop, but we do specialize in weddings and special occasions,” said Sheri Mahr, owner. “We had over 75 weddings this year, and it’s growing every year.”

Being that flowers traditionally play an important role in decorating for a wedding, Mahr recommends that future brides visit their florist at least eight months before the big day. This way the plans for floral creations can be made early.

Another important point: “Know your colors, or have an idea of what colors you already want,” said Mahr. “The bride should already have their venue.” Having this information secured early is a springboard for the floral needs.

Wedding consultations at Sheri’s Flowers are thorough and can take up to two hours. Mahr’s reputation for patience is the key in producing floral perfection for a wedding or special event. Her extensive checklists keep an upcoming event organized.

When meeting with a bride, the best piece of advice Mahr gives her, in choosing the flowers for her bouquet, is to get the flowers she really wants, even if they are a bit more expensive.

“I tell the brides to go ahead and spend that little extra money in their bouquet, because it will be in all her pictures,” Mahr said.

Mahr is expert in assisting a bride in picking the right bouquet size, which should be chosen in relation to a bride’s physique. The bouquet is also meant to further enhance the beauty of the bride.

If the bride has not had the opportunity to snip photos of flowers out of bridal magazines, there is no need to fret.

“I have tons of books they can look through,” Mahr said. Many of these photos are of previous weddings that Mahr has worked on, giving a bride an idea of the artistic beauty of Sheri’s Flowers.

“My goal is to do whatever the bride wants,” she said.

With three daughters of her own, Mahr has a tendency to take the bride on as a daughter. “I want everything as perfect for the bride as I would for my own daughter,” she confirmed.

At a reception, one of the main eye-catchers is the table centerpieces. These days, either low or high centerpieces are the trend, says Mahr. The reason for this is so that guests at the table can view one another without obstruction.

Incorporating candles into the centerpieces accentuates a romantic mood and gives the room that special extra glow.

“What we tend to use most are the votive candles, but we’ve also used hurricane lamps in the centerpieces, too,” Mahr said. Floating candles have also been a popular choice.

The bride always gets 100-percent commitment from Sheri’s Flowers, said Mahr.

Her manager and close friend, Lisa Sperry, is constantly “wowed” by Mahr’s creativity.

“She’s a perfectionist and determined to make everything exactly as the bride wants,” Sperry said.

On the day of the wedding, when Mahr hands the bride her bouquet, she always feels a wave of emotion when they tell her, “That’s exactly what I wanted.”
