Salm 4th in Modified series

Mike Salm finished fourth in the Lucas Oil ASA Modified Championship series which consisted of nine races at three different paved ovals.

Although Salm had to pit during the final race of the season November 10 at I-10 Speedway in Blythe, he finished the season with 310 points. Danny Gay won the season championship with 414 points, Jason Patison placed second with 384 points, and Jimmy Dickerson accumulated 360 points to finish third. Tim Morse concluded the season immediately behind Salm in the standings with 292 points.

“It’s a top five,” Salm said. “We did pretty good in the series.”

The races took place at I-10 Speedway, Havasu Speedway in Lake Havasu, and Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino. Salm’s highest finish in an individual race was a second-place main event result June 9 at Orange Show. He also won three Trophy Dash races during the year: one at Havasu Speedway and two at I-10 Speedway. “We’ve got the car working good,” Salm said.

Salm was leading the final race of the season before tangling with the lapped car of another Fallbrook driver, Chris Patton. Patton’s car was making a return trip from the track wall when Salm ran into it. “Pretty much ended our night for that night,” Salm said. “The points turned out better than our luck turned out for finishes.”

Salm raced with Gay and Dickerson at the Cajon Speedway. Other Lucas Oil ASA Modified Championship drivers who had raced in Cajon Speedway’s Grand American Modified division include John Tyczki Jr., Doug Carpenter, and Scott Brown. “It made it fun,” Salm said of racing against other former Cajon Speedway drivers. “Plus all the races are televised, so that made it kind of fun, too.”

Salm’s crew for the year consisted of Austin Barnes, Tim Barnes, Jim Gray, and David Salm.

Mike Salm plans to race the 2008 Lucas Oil ASA Modified Championship series. “Right now we’re working on some sponsorships,” he said.
