Water cutback not affecting new housing plans

Many farmers will go out of business because of the impending 30 percent cutback in their water. This was confirmed at a meeting Thursday evening during which growers learned the details of how the cutback will be enforced.

This action raises questions. If the water authorities don’t have enough water to keep our farmers alive, where do they get off turning around and making commitments to the more than 5,000 new housing units in the planning mill? If the water is not there for farmers it should not be there for new development.

No water officials are saying anymore that this drought we are in is temporary. If they are banking on the desalination plant bailing us out, that will be a long wait – too late for our farmers. When it does come, new development should get in line.
