The Dustin Garcia Memorial Tournament, now in its third year, marked the end of another great soccer season for Fallbrook Youth Soccer League (FYSL). In the end, the Copperheads won the U8 division, the Dolphins won the U10 division and the Condors won the U12 division.

This tournament is played in remembrance of Dustin Garcia, a longtime FYSL/Fallbrook Fury player. On January 27, 2005, at the age of 23, Dustin took his own life in what is termed “the silent epidemic of suicide.”

Each year, one player is selected in each age division and a special award is presented to that “one” player by the Garcia family and Dustin’s former teammates. They look for unselfish play, determination and aggressive (not abusive) play, but most importantly that child who displays the sportsmanship that is crucial to the game that Dustin loved. This year’s recipients were Francisco Mariscal, U8; Lauren Prahm, U10; and Chase Colin, U12.

This year, along with some great soccer games, FYSL was pleased to have two of the Los Angeles Galaxy’s MLS players attend the event: Pete Vagenas, a holding midfielder who has established himself among the best players at his position in MLS during his seven-year career, and Lance Friesz, one of their newest goal keepers. A four-year starter at the University of San Diego, Friesz was signed by the Galaxy after impressing on a preseason trial.

All of our players were excited to have their pictures taken along with having their soccer jerseys, balls and player cards signed by both players.

FYSL would like to thank all of their sponsors for helping the youth in this community. It is with their help that FYSL is able to continue to strive for excellence in youth soccer. Their newest soccer partner is the LA Galaxy. The youth are looking forward to attending many MLS games at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.

Anyone wanting information on how to play soccer in college can attend Fury Soccer Club’s college night on December 6 at Fallbrook High School at 7 p.m. in room 201. This is a chance to find out what colleges are looking for.
