Fallbrook High School’s girls volleyball team placed second in the 2007 San Diego Fall Classic held September 14-15 at the Epic Volleyball Center in Poway.

The Warriors won their first six matches before a loss to Poway in the finals. “I’m very happy with how the girls performed considering their head coach was out of town,” said assistant coach Cindy Lloyd. “I thought they did really well without having him there.”

The Warriors won their pool by sweeping all three pool opponents during the September 14 matches. The Warriors first faced Northern California’s Lincoln High School and played Lincoln to a 25-17, 25-16 victory. Fallbrook’s next pool opponent was San Pasqual, and the Warriors won 25-23 and 25-14 games over the Golden Eagles. Fallbrook completed pool play with a 25-13, 25-15 win over Lakeside High School of Lake Elsinore.

Fallbrook’s first-place showing in pool play gave the Warriors a berth in the Gold bracket. In the crossover game the Warriors faced Westview and took a 25-15, 25-22 victory over the Wolverines. The win paired the Warriors with Mount Carmel for the first elimination match; Fallbrook won a 25-22 first game while the Sundevils prevailed by a 25-16 score in the second game. In the third game Fallbrook advanced to the semifinals with a 16-14 victory.

Fallbrook faced Vista in the semifinals and ousted the Panthers with 25-23 and 26-24 wins. The semifinal triumph gave the Warriors a match in the finals against Poway, but the Titans took 25-18 and 25-22 wins to win the tournament championship.

Two Warrior players, Shelly Morton and Hailey Van Wechel, were selected to the all-tournament team.

Three days after the tournament finals, the Warriors defeated Poway in a non-league match lasting four games. “We did lose to Poway in the tournament, but we turned around and beat them in a pre-league match,” Lloyd said.
