'Tis the season to be prepared

Just a few short weeks ago, parts of San Diego County were devastated by wildfires.

One of the lessons many learned from this tragic experience is that disasters can strike anywhere, at any time, and without warning.

Not everyone knows what to do if a disaster happens in their backyard or has the proper emergency supplies and disaster kits to ensure that their family will be safe.

This holiday season, residents can give the gift that could save a life with the following items available through the local American Red Cross headquarters and online store. It could be the most valuable gift anyone receives this year.

• Red Cross gift certificates – Help prepare family and friends for any emergency by giving gift certificates for CPR and first aid certification classes.

• First aid kits – An essential for every household, car and dorm room. Stock up on Red Cross first aid kits in a variety of sizes and carrying cases.

• Disaster packs – Kits contain emergency supplies for one, two or four people for up to 72 hours following an emergency (while supplies last).

• Safety Tubes – This tube full of safety supplies can be attached under a desk and is easy to transport in the event of an emergency or workplace disaster.

• Don’t forget pets – Pet first aid kits and gift certificates for pet CPR/first aid classes are the perfect gift for any animal lover.

The American Red Cross store also has a variety of preparedness items for $10 or less for stocking stuffers:

• CPR supplies key chains

• Fanny pack and pocket-size first aid kit

• First aid safety key chains

• Solo first aid kits

• Emergency whistles

• Safety Tubes

These and many other American Red Cross items are available online at http://www.sdarc.org or by calling (858) 309-1241.
