Multi-story fire safety tips

Many San Diego County residents enjoy the comfort of living in two-story homes. These homes require additional fire safety considerations that will help to protect life and property.

Remember, smoke and heat rise, and most sleeping areas are upstairs. The possibility of being overcome by smoke or trapped because normal exit routes are blocked is most likely to occur between midnight and 8 a.m., when people are asleep.

Some rules to follow are: preplan exit routes; sleep with bedroom doors closed; have an emergency exit ladder near a centrally located window; and, most importantly, have an approved smoke detector in each room and outside sleeping areas.

Be fire safe, not sorry!
