Palomar adds foreign language classes to spring curriculum

SAN MARCOS — Palomar College’s spring class schedule includes several new sections of foreign language classes, including a brand new Spanish video course.

Responding to increased demand, the Foreign Languages Department has added classes in French, Italian and Spanish. Many courses are offered at both the San Marcos and Escondido campuses.

Two new sections of French evening classes, French 101 and 102, are offered on the San Marcos and Escondido campuses. An Italian 101 class has been added, as well as several additional online Spanish classes, Spanish 101, Spanish 101A, Spanish 101B and Spanish 201A and 201B. Also, additional sections of Spanish 102 and Spanish 201 classes are available.

The Spanish video courses are presented through Palomar College Television and allow for students to view the lectures online, through DVD or cable TV or to download the Podcast.

According to Spanish instructor Carlos Pedroza, “The video course format offers the student the convenience of working from home and replicates one-on-one instruction. Our award-winning program uses real-life images and situations, written text and voices of native speakers so that students learn to speak, read and write the new language quickly, naturally and easily.”

Spanish instructor Kathleen Sheahan said that the Spanish video course can be a standalone course or can be used to complement traditional face-to-face classes. It can also be used as a resource in language laboratories or the Palomar College Library.
