Exercise personalized at SIFT Workout

Not interested in a typical gym filled with wall to wall equipment and swarms of members going from point A to point B? SIFT Workout may be just the thing you’ve been looking for – an elite boutique-style training experience with highly experienced trainers.

“We are a unique environment in that we are not your traditional gym,” said owner Erica Williams. One-hour “appointment only” times reduce the traffic volume of visiting members so that the environment is more personal, distractions are minimal and more privacy is enjoyed.

SIFT offers small group training sessions for up to four members in a given time period. This unique concept is something special created by Williams. In her career, she has discovered how “one on one” private sessions were considered too expensive by many clients and filled with a great deal of “chat” time.

SIFT is best described as a private, serene facility and has often been called a hidden treasure. Beautiful paintings adorn the walls and an outdoor deck with trickling sounds from Ostrich Creek below provides an additional workout area, giving patrons a more exclusive experience.

“We don’t have a lot of big equipment because there are so many things that you can do without equipment,” said Williams. “We get rid of the intimidation and realize that our bodies can do many things with few apparatuses.”

Williams has been a personal trainer since 1991. She earned her degree in kinesiology, which is the study of movement.

Kinesiology encompasses anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology, nutrition and sports, explained Williams. Her Fallbrook location is new, but her popular Oceanside facility has been in operation for five years.

SIFT is an acronym for Structured Interactional Fitness Technique.

“We are very person-specific,” said Williams. “Each person is different and may have physical and/or medical issues that we need to watch out for.”

Every member has a different goal and SIFT structures each workout to work toward meeting that goal.

Williams said she often communicates and works with a member’s physician, chiropractor and/or physical therapist for maximum benefit to the client.

The three components of fitness goals at SIFT are cardiorespiratory, muscular strength and endurance and functional fitness. “We achieve these goals in a fun, lifestyle way that make members want to come back,” said Williams.

Before someone signs up at SIFT, they fill out a full heath history form and get assessed. “We do a body alignment analysis; we look at their posture.”

For back sufferers, Williams, for example, will inspect the hips and assess if they are tilted in an anterior or posterior position. She will also check to see if the shoulders are rolled inward.

“We see what’s throwing the body alignment off,” she said. “After the assessment, we get their muscles stronger to pull them back in proper position and stretch the ones that are pulling too tight.”

Williams has helped many people who suffer from chronic pain obtain a new lease on life.

“I’ve been doing this long enough that at six weeks many [clients] seem to forget they had an injury, because they are getting stronger,” she said.

Exercise is the answer to many people’s woes, said Williams. Exercise can aid with fatigue, depression, weight loss and chronic pain. When the body is in motion, blood flow and oxygen goes through the body, providing an amazing effect.

“Exercise is really a miracle drug,” Williams said.
