Green's solutions ignore the realities

Mr. Green claims to have offered solutions to the current Iraq situation. What he claims to have offered are so simplistic that they could easily be overlooked!

To just say “Let the people of Iraq fashion their own destiny” is to ignore the realities that exist. To have left as he suggests would have meant leaving the majority of the people at the mercy of the thugs of Al Qaeda and it would not be pretty.

To offer meaningful solutions (and there are several possibilities) requires that each be analyzed with proper evaluation for the consequences and then to choose the one that seems to have the greatest possibility of success with an explanation of the reasoning.

There are rarely perfect solutions and peaceful people can easily be swayed to accept simplistic and nice-sounding choices which turn out badly when they are implemented.

We live in an imperfect world and usually the best political results occur when people are free to make choices. The operative word here is “free.”

Our much maligned current government wants to “let the Iraqi people fashion their own destiny,” but that requires an environment which assures that the people are truly “free” to do so, a condition that at the present time appears to have some chance of success.

A thoughtful and useful evaluation of an isolated issue (Iraq) requires that it be analyzed in all its greater geopolitical aspects. And there are effects of what happens in Iraq that encompass a much wider political scene.

Happy New Year.
