Guac Girls 2-1-3 at Field Hockey Fest

The Guac Girls, Fallbrook’s field hockey team which played in the National Field Hockey Festival in Palm Desert during Thanksgiving Weekend, came away with a record of two wins, one loss, and three ties.

“They were all very tight,” Coach Kathy Waite said of the matches. “The girls played great; competitive, dedicated, ready to play hockey. I was very pleased.”

Because the tournament takes place after the end of the CIF field hockey season, the team did not officially represent Fallbrook High School.

Without the ability to call themselves the Warriors, the team has adopted the name Guac Girls for the Field Hockey Festival, other tournaments outside of the CIF season, and indoor league play.

The 2007 National Field Hockey Festival took place November 22-24 at the La Quinta Polo Grounds. A total of 224 teams, 160 of which were in the high school division, participated.

The high school teams were divided into pools based on competition level, with the earliest letters of the alphabet corresponding to the toughest competition. The Guac Girls were placed in Pool J.

Unlike CIF play, where a “strokes” series of penalty shots determines a winner if the score is tied, the National Field Hockey Festival has no tiebreakers after regulation.

The Guac Girls tied teams from New York, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The matches against the New York and Pennsylvania teams were both 1-1 games while the contest against Maryland was scoreless.

The Guac Girls defeated teams from Virginia and New Jersey, both by 1-0 scores. A team from Louisville, Kentucky, took a 2-0 win over the Guac Girls.

“I was very pleased with the way we finished,” Waite said.

The National Field Hockey Festival also draws college field hockey coaches who evaluate high school seniors. Following the tournament Fallbrook seniors Emily Badillo, Devon Holman, and Roslyn Reynoso spoke with various college coaches.

“Roslyn, Emily, and Devon came away with some good college prospects,” Waite said.
