Football coach search to include AFCA booth this weekend

igh School head football coach will be taken to the American Football Coaches Association annual conference in Anaheim this weekend, where the Fallbrook Union High School District will have a booth as part of their nationwide search.

“We’re hoping to find the most qualified available,” said Fallbrook High School athletic director Patrick Walker. “We’re going basically nationwide with this.”

Patrick Schmidt, who had coached the Warriors during the 2006 and 2007 seasons, resigned in late November. “He basically said that he couldn’t dedicate the time that he needed because he has a business of his own and that Fallbrook High School really needed a teacher on-site to be a football coach,” Walker said.

Schmidt, whose varsity teams posted records of 0-10 in 2006 and 2-8 in 2007, stated that the student-athletes deserve the commitment of a full-time school district staff member. Walker has incorporated that criteria into the attributes of the next coach. “He will be a teacher on-site,” Walker said. “That’s what we’re going for. We will not settle for anything less.”

School district policy requires that notices of position openings first be posted in-house. After any district employees express interest, the vacancy is then advertised outside the district.

The school district has already heard from applicants both within North County and outside of the area. “We’re already real happy with the amount of phone calls we’ve got,” Walker said. “We’re really happy already about the volume of candidates that we’re getting.”

The application process is through the district’s human resources department rather than through the high school athletic department, although the athletic department will be involved when candidates are interviewed. Applications for the coaching position carry a February 15 deadline. “After that we’ll get with Human Resources and go through that volume of candidates,” Walker said.

Some of those candidates will be interviewed, and any hiring decisions must be approved by the Fallbrook Union High School District board.
