Clemens loves speed racers and this 1939 Buick

Recently, I had an opportunity to speak with Richard Clemens, 81, who is retired and lives in Fallbrook. Clemens is the director of public relations for the Fallbrook Vintage Car Club and the owner of a gleaming, fully restored 1939 Buick Special.

He graciously provided the answers to the questions below.

Village News: Where and when did you get your car?

Richard Clemens: In April of 2007 in Portland, OR, during a swap meet for cars.

VN: Why did you choose this car?

RC: I wanted an older, running car that was common in my growing up [years].

VN: What caused you to be interested in cars?

RC: I have been into high-performance cars most of my life. I owned a large speed shop in Seattle. I managed large speed racers like Craig Breadlove and Mickey Thompson.

VN: Do you drive the Buick regularly?

RC: Just to special events.

VN: What sacrifices have you made, if any, for your car?

RC: I shipped it here from Oregon in a rainstorm.

VN: Feel free to add anything else.

RC: I’m looking forward to this year’s car show at Potter Jr. High School.

The venue has changed after 42 years at Fallbrook High School. They put in <artificial> turf on the football field and it is not friendly to leaking oil or fluids from cars, so we had to move.

Potter Jr. High is ideal for our show. It will be held Memorial Day Sunday [May 25]. We are expecting over 300 cars on display this year. Admission is free.
