Learn basket-weaving techniques Feb. 9

Among all Native American basketry, that of the California Indians is renowned for its diversity, craftsmanship and magnificence. For California Indians, basket making was more than just a daily part of life; it was and still is a serious and disciplined art.

The San Diego Archaeological Center presents Diania Caudell (Luiseño), member of California Indian Basketweavers Association, for the Second Saturday Archaeology Day on February 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The center is located at 16666 San Pasqual Valley Road, Escondido (1.1 miles east of the Wild Animal Park).

Caudell will give an introductory course in the traditional Pine Needle and Raffia weaving technique. Participants will have the opportunity to begin weaving a beautiful pine needle and raffia basket.

Reservations are required and children must be at least 12 years old. Suggested donation for this workshop is $10 for Center members and $25 for non-members.

Workshop fees include basket materials. Participants should bring a sack lunch to enjoy; water and drinks will be provided.
