Tim Flannery and friends in concert Jan. 19

FALLBROOK — Tim Flannery of baseball fame has a sideline. Off-season, he’s a songwriter in the tradition of Merle Haggard and a performer on vocals and guitar doing what one reviewer calls “back porch” songs, folk tunes, light pop and maybe a little swing, all very listenable.

Flannery will appear at the Mission Theater on Saturday, January 19, at 7:30 p.m.

Backing him will be some of San Diego’s finest musicians: Dennis Caplinger on banjo, Jeff Berkley on bass and Sharon Whyte on accordion.

Flannery is a 25-year veteran of the San Diego Padres, moving from player to coach to broadcaster. He recently took a job as third-base coach for the San Francisco Giants.

Twelve years ago, Flannery answered the call of another constant in his life and began doing music seriously. He’s come a long way to become a highly sought after performer – but not during baseball season.

This concert is the first of the 2008 season presented by Fallbrook Americana Music Series.

This year, some of the concerts will be held at the Mission Theater and others at the Fallbrook Woman’s Club.

Tickets – $15 for adults, $7 for kids ages 7 to 17 – are available by calling the theater at (760) 731-2278. For general information, call (760) 723-7255.
