Discover the quaint mountain town of Idyllwild

Why not leave the fast pace behind and spend the day enjoying the fresh, clean air of the mountains? Like to hike along paths that weave through beautiful, tall pine trees? Try Idyllwild.

About an hour and forty-five minute drive from Fallbrook, this charming mountain town sits below the San Jacinto Mountains and is much less crowded than Big Bear or Lake Arrowhead.

To get there, take Interstate 15 north to 79 South to Hwy 371. Drive through the town of Anza until you reach Hwy 74. Make a left on 74 toward Lake Hemet until you reach Hwy 243 Mountain Center. Turn right at Hwy 243 and follow the road into town.

If you leave early in the morning, you can stop and have breakfast at the Idyllwild Café on Hwy 243 just before entering town. The café is a popular eatery with locals and visitors alike.

After breakfast, take a drive up to Humber Park and hike the easy Ernie Maxwell trail that skirts along the hillside above Idyllwild. More adventurous hikers can hit the trails of the San Jacinto Mountains.

The mountains offer 275 miles of trails that are varied and can appeal to all hikers; from the inexperienced novice to the advanced hiker, there is something for everyone.

Inexpensive maps are available through the U.S. Forest Service.

Depending on the time of year, Idyllwild offers horseback riding, rock climbing, bike riding, picnicking, camping and snow play.

Of course, there’s always the opportunity to leisurely explore the many quaint boutiques, art galleries and shops in the heart of Idyllwild.

The town is home to many artists and offers 18 fine art galleries. Like Fallbrook, Idyllwild has been named one of the ‘100 Best Art Towns in America.’

After spending time browsing through the shops, head over to the Java Lounge, Idyllwild’s version of Starbucks, for a cup of coffee and relax to live music.

Before heading home, drive out to Inspiration Point and take in the view of the Hemet Valley while watching a spectacular sunset.

If you decide you would like to make a weekend out of your trip, Idyllwild offers cabins and cottages for rent. Lake Hemet is close by if you enjoy fishing.

For those of you wishing for more luxurious lodging there are several bed-and-breakfasts and inns that offer spa and massage services. Prices for lodging is reasonable and traffic is usually minimal.
