Hasvold named Hall of Champions Star of the Month

Fallbrook High School senior Bret Hasvold was named a Prep Star of the Month for November by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Hasvold was recognized for winning the CIF San Diego Section Division I meet and posting the fastest time among San Diego Section runners at the state meet.

His November races also included the North County Conference finals, where his time of 15:51 on the 3.1-mile course not only won the Avocado League meet but was also the fastest among all runners in the three participating leagues.

Hasvold’s time of 15:24 at the state meet was the fourth-fastest performance among Division I runners and the eighth-fastest among the 969 runners in all divisions. His time of 15:59 in the San Diego Section’s championship was 20 seconds faster than his closest competitor.

“It’s a good feeling to know that,” Hasvold said of his Star of the Month award. “I feel honored.”

Hasvold was one of six athletes to win a Prep Star of the Month for November. The others were Santa Fe Christian volleyball player Sami Miller, Madison football player Robbie Rouse, Cathedral Catholic tennis player Gaby DeSimone, Our Lady of Peace cross-country runner Sammy Silva, and Carlsbad golfer Rachel Morris.

“To be bestowed with such an honor is quite pleasing,” said Fallbrook cross-country coach Marco Arias. “It is just nice to have our athletes being recognized at that level.”

A selection committee at the Hall of Champions studies statistics and achievements. In addition to collecting statistics, the Hall of Champions staff speaks with coaches, and athletic directors in the case of high school stars, to obtain recommendations.

The awards committee reviews a list of 12 to 15 names to select its prep athletes of the month. Typically six prep athletes are chosen each month of the academic year, although some months may have more than six athletes selected and some months may see fewer than six prep stars honored. Each month also typically sees the selection of four amateur stars and six professional stars to receive the monthly honors.

“We were all pretty surprised as well, but quite happy,” Arias said of Hasvold’s selection. “We were quite happy with it and very proud of him.”

The Breitbard Star of the Month winners for 2007 will be honored along with the professional, amateur, and disabled Stars of the Year and the Breitbard Hall of Fame inductees at the annual Salute to the Champions dinner, which will be held March 4 at the Town and Country Hotel in San Diego.
