Laura Shaw

Laura Shaw, also known as “Mom” to many people other than her three children, passed away January 21, 2008.

She was born during a snowstorm in Aurora, CO, on April 20, 1920. She was delivered at home by her Grandmother Laura, who she was named after. The doctor was unable to come to their house until the following day; consequently, her birth certificate gives her date of birth as April 21. The different in dates caused confusion years later.

Laura was born to Lucille and Sydney Fry. She was raised by her mother and beloved stepfather Lester Craghead in Colorado and California. She met Cecil Shaw in Denver when she was 18 and they married less than a year later.

After WWII, Cecil was a station manager for Continental Airlines. The family moved with each promotion to a new town in the southwest part of the country. With each move, Laura quickly made their house a home.

She was most proud of being a mom and considered her children her life’s greatest accomplishment. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for her two daughters and a Cub Scout leader for her son. She helped teach tap dancing so that her daughters could have lessons. Her children’s friends would come home to her house because she would have fresh baked cookies or home baked bread.

Laura raised her children in the Methodist Church. She always gave unconditional love to her family and friends. Each day was a blessing. Her sunny personality will be missed.

Laura moved to Fallbrook 10 years ago. She loved the town and the people in it. She always said that she felt like she had moved to an enchanted village. Laura was active in Newcomers, Encore, Fallbrook Woman’s Club, Garden Club and Fallbrook United Methodist Church.

Laura was preceded in death by husband Cecil and granddaughter Amanda. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Margo and Barry Remmel, Silver City, NM, and Carol and Mike Reardon, Fallbrook, CA; son and daughter-in-law Mike and Victoria Shaw, Wylie, TX; grandchildren Carla, Christopher, Steve and Brett; and great-grandchildren Jessica, Jennifer, Mitch and Marella.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 9, at 11 a.m. at Fallbrook United Methodist Church, 1844 Winterhaven Road.
