Soroptimist shares behind-the-scenes fire info

Fallbroook, CA - Eileen Delaney spoke at the January 17, 2008 Soroptimist International of Fallbrook meeting about what took place behind the scenes during the recent Fallbrook fires. Delaney, who assisted as a community public information officer during the fire, said that over a four day period she volunteered at the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce office that fielded over 30,000 telephone calls from residents and the media. Delaney said, “There was a group effort from all fire agencies that saved so many of our homes. Downtown Fallbrook was in real danger of burning down. We’re very fortunate to still have our town.”

Delaney also praised Camp Pendleton for their help with emergency services. The base offered their gym to dislocated residents, providing 2,100 cots, toiletries and three meals a day. Over 23,000 vehicles crossed Camp Pendleton’s base during the evacuation.

She concluded her presentation by saying, “I now have a new perspective being on the other side of a fire emergency situation. I understand clearly now why our emergency service providers asked us to evacuate. The fire was moving so fast, jumping the freeway, and creating a real danger to the entire town of Fallbrook. Evacuating 45,000 plus residents with very little notice would be impossible. If you’re asked to evacuate, please do so. Even if it seems unnecessary, trust the knowledge of your fire department and emergency personnel.”
